Ember of Thornvale
Ember of Thornvale is the kind of RPG I didn't expect to find on mobile without a hundred pop-ups begging for my attention. You play a wandering ember-keeper trying to relight the beacons that once kept the northern roads safe, and the writing is genuinely worth reading — dry, a little sad, never overstuffed.
Combat is turn-based and grid-light, so it fits the screen without demanding pixel-perfect taps. Positioning matters, elemental weaknesses matter, and by the mid-game you're juggling a small party with real personalities. The difficulty curve is fair; I lost a couple of fights and never felt cheated, just under-prepared.
My only gripe is the inventory menus, which get a bit cluttered once you've hoarded enough loot. But that's a small stain on a genuinely absorbing little role-player that respects your intelligence.
What we liked
- Writing that's actually worth reading
- Fair, thoughtful turn-based combat
